The Commando Trail
Visitors to Achnacarry today can walk through the areas in which the Commandos trained.
While nothing now remains of the Training Centre, it is poignant to visit the grounds, including the banks of the River Arkaig where the Tarzan Course, Death Slide and Toggle Bridge were all situated.
Castle Commando
While the men in training lived in Nissen huts in the park, the Commando training officers were based within the castle. The officers’ mess with accompanying mural can be seen here.

The Commando Basic Training Centre
The 12 week course was designed to stretch human stamina to the limit, and Achnacarry became known as one of the toughest assault training courses in the world.
Live ammunition was always used and a number of recruits were killed in training.
